Today, I’m starting a new series called “Beer Passport”. It will basically contain the brief bit of information I find most pertinent to the beers I try – and maybe even a few oldies, but goodies. Maybe even a few stinkers too, just to prove I don’t like everything I try 😉

John Hickenloop, the current Governor of Colorado and a founding member of Wynkoop Brewing Co. in Denver, CO, has made huge contributions both to the brewing industry and to the city of Denver’s LoDo (lower downtown) region. Word has it that he may be a candidate for the next vice presidency. Once politicians start buying us beer to vote for them, I’ll take it a bit more seriously. Hmmm… did I just come up with the best campaign idea since pre-prohibition?
Anyway, here’s a quirky little slideshow outlining how he got to where he is today.

With spring around the corner, it’s a great time to start thinking about making your own ales, as temperatures should start steadying and storage conditions become more favorable.
If you love beer, are moderately ambitious, and have some free time to spend on a truly rewarding project, give this a shot. There are various ways to go about homebrewing, but I believe this method is about as genuine as it gets. Keep in mind, it is the recipe for a Belgian wheat, so before embarking on anything – consult your recipe and gather materials accordingly.

It’s fun to bash Starbucks as a symbol of yuppiedom and paying too much for something that you can get for less down the street, but there’s little denying that they put gourmet coffee on the map in America.
Look no further than the grocery store, typically the last place that latches onto a trend. Before Starbucks, the selection in the coffee aisle was pretty pedestrian. Now the Starbucks-propelled enthusiasm for high-grade jet fuel has trickled down to my local Stop n’ Shop, where I can (thankfully) get a bag of Peet’s Major Dickason’s blend any time I want. A few years ago, I would’ve had to fly to San Francisco to get my hands on any. That’s progress in my book.
